2. FAQ regarding test details (Answers) |
Q1 |
What is a "CASEC" test? |
A1 |
CASEC(Computerized Assessment System for English Communication) is a standard test for evaluating English proficiency. It is based on fundamental research by Eiken Foundation of Japan, The Japan Institute for Educational Measurement, Inc. of Oubunsha Group who is currently developing and operating this internet based English proficiency test.
The test applies CAT(Computerized Adaptive Testing) based on IRT(Item Response Theory). CAT is a system which modifies the difficulty of the subsequent questions based on the examinee's previous attempts. This allows shortening of time and accurate skill measurement compared to the paper based tests. Unlike the randomized question generating computer test type, CAT maintains high accuracy measurement system that is equal to the qualification tests such as TOEIC(R) and Eiken.
CASEC can be taken online at any time and the score is immediately show at the end of the test. The score history is saved on record and can be seen at any time at no cost. |
 |
Q2 |
What is "IRT"(=Item Response Theory)? |
A2 |
IRT(Item Response Theory) is a modern test theory that allows "assessment of absolute scale" which was not possible by preceding methods of having tests based on raw score (total score/average/GPA). Without the dependency on examinee groups and test questions, IRT estimates the new examinee's ability using the absolute scale of assessment based on characteristic value (difficulty, discernment) of each questions that was calculated from the previous preparation test data. |
 |
Q3 |
What is "CAT"(=Computerized Adaptive Testing)? |
A3 |
CAT(Computerized Adaptive Testing) is a test which selects the next question from the existing question bank, based on the answers given by the examinee in previous questions.
CASEC adjusts the difficulty of subsequent questions based on the right or wrong answer of the preceding questions. By applying this method, examinee can avoid being questioned with inappropriately difficult or easy questions. CAT produces high accuracy measurement with less questions compared to the preceding paper based test by allowing the examinees to solve questions at appropriate levels. |

 |

 |
Q8 |
Do I get a detailed score report? |
A8 |
CASEC does not disclose the questions answers or incorrect parts as CASEC is a measurement tool for accurately measuring the examinee's ability at a particular moment, and it is not teaching material.
CASEC uses a modern testing theory known as Item Response Theory (IRT) in order to produce highly reliable measurement results. In the process of statistically calculating the index to indicate each question's characteristic value, CASEC runs preparation test over one thousand samples for each question prior to applying the questions for the actual test.
CASEC does not disclose the questions answers or incorrect parts, as doing so may degenerate the accuracy of measuring an examinee's level. |
